1. e4 d6 2. d4 Nf6 3. Nc3 g6 4. f4 the popular Austrian attack. 4... Bg7 5. Nf3 c5 this line attacks the centre early but can become very sharp, 5...0-0 is a common alternative. 6. dxc5 Qa5 7. Bd3 7. cxd6?! Nxe4 8. dxe7 Nxc3 9. bxc3 Qxc3+ note how strong the B on g7 is which prevents Bd2. 10. Kf2 Nc6 white's once strong centre is destroyed and the king weakened. 7... Qxc5 8. Qe2 last book move. 8... O-O 9. Be3 white develops with tempo. 9... Qc7 Qa5 or Qh5 might have been better but I felt the need to protect the d-pawn. 10. h3 blocks the freeing move Bg4. 10... Nc6 11. O-O Nd7 preparing e5 or f5 plus gives the B more scope on the a1-h8 diagonal. 12. Nd5 Qb8 13. c4 e6 14. Nc3 f5?! 14... Bxc3!? 15. bxc3 15. Rad1 Bxc3 messes up the queenside pawns, but gives up the strong bishop. 16. bxc3 Nc5?! according to computer analysis this is the most advantageous position white had (a little over one pawn equivalent). After Bc2 he keeps the Bishop pair and the more active pieces. 16... Qc7 17. exf5 exf5 18. Nd4= 18. Rfe1 18... Re8 19. Qf3= Ne4 19... Nxd4 20. cxd4 Nxd3 21. Rxd3 b6 20. Rde1 Bd7 20... Nxc3? fails to 21. Nxc6 bxc6 22. Bd4 21. Bxe4 Rxe4 22. Bf2 Nxd4 23. Bxd4= 23. cxd4 23... Bc6 24. Qg3 Qf8 25. Rxe4 Bxe4 26. h4 Qf7 27. Qg5 h5 28. Re1= Kh7 firms up the position and white offers the draw as there is no way through. 1/2-1/2
